Poverty, Drinking and Mortality: by County Scatter Chart

In the post about smoking, obesity and drinking vs mortality we saw the smoking and obesity were correlated with mortality while excessive drinking is the opposite.

Why is that? One guess is that people who are in poverty tend not to drink as much. Charts (bubble size = county population):

poverty vs excess drinking by county 2

That seems to be the case.

And of course, mortality is correlated with poverty:

Poverty rate vs excessive drinking

However, the association seems much stronger between poverty and mortality vs poverty and drinking.
